Led by Tvesa Malik, who had the best card among the four Indians on the first day with an opening score of 1-over 74, none were inside the projected cut line of even par.

But Jamie Smith and Harry Brook had other ideas, smashing unbeaten knocks of 102 and 91 respectively to share a quickfire 165-run stand to lead a stunning counter-attack from England.
