Shekhar Kapur gets emotional as he rediscovers old family memory, reflects on life as a nomad

Mumbai, June 29 (IANS) Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur has shared a deeply reflective note after rediscovering an old family photograph while going through forgotten belongings.

In his recent post on Instagram, he opened up about memories, nostalgia, and his lifelong journey of moving across places, which led him to question the true meaning of “home” and identity. Kapur shared a rare throwback photo featuring himself, his daughter Kaveri, and his nephew from his younger days. The picture shows a young Kaveri posing with her father, capturing a nostalgic family moment from the past.

For the caption, he wrote, “It’s amazing where your memories are hidden somewhere for you to suddenly rediscover .. … yesterday rummaging through some stuff ‘lost in transit’ @kaverikapur found this picture .. of me, my nephew Amaye , and Kaveri when she was little .. We had just celebrated her birthday and the joy on her face is so enchanting ..It’s the exuberance of being a child ..” (sic)

“The photo was hidden amongst a bunch of old passports of mine .. and Kaveri was intrigued by them , as she went through each of them .. ‘It’s the history of a nomad’ She said And suddenly it hit home .. that I have been a nomad since I first left ‘Home’ at 18 .. ‘What is ‘Home’ ‘ I ask myself. All over the world my generation and the next, the Gen Z as we call them .. travel and move all the time .. and yet constantly that one question haunts them .. ‘Where is home ?’ Have we become like Tortoises? Who carry a shell on their backs , that they crawl into to sleep ? And call that ‘Shell’ our home?”

The director went on to add, “Or is home our identity that we are constantly in search of ? ‘What is Home ‘ ? Is the theme of my next film Masoom 2.. or Masoom-the next generation .. #Masoom #Masoom2 #Home #tortoise #identity.”

On the work front, Shekhar Kapur and A.R. Rahman announced their collaboration on “Masoom: The New Generation” in May. The duo has previously worked together on several notable projects, including “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” and stage productions such as “Bombay Dreams” and “Why? The Musical,” among others.
