Sikh man’s body found in canal


FRESNO, CA -- An Indian American Sikh resident of Fresno, Calif. was found dead in a canal several miles from his home on July 24 morning with signs of visible trauma on his body, indicating a possible murder.

Subag Singh, 68, was last seen a day earlier, taking his routine morning walk. Singh was wearing a small handkerchief on his head.

According to a statement issued by the Fresno County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office, Singh’s body was first seen floating in the water by an employee of the Fresno Irrigation Department. A Sheriff’s Office divers’ team removed the body from the water.

Detectives determined Singh’s death was a homicide when they inspected his body and found signs of visible trauma.

Tony Botti, a spokesperson for the Fresno County Sheriff’s Department, said that Singh’s death could not be taken as a hate crime till the results of their investigation.

Singh, a store clerk, left behind his son, Gurvinder ‘Raaj’ Sandhu; and his daughter-in-law, Hilda Sandhu.
