Mandi Theater marks Int'l Women’s Day

CAROL STREAM, IL -- In honor of the International Women’s Day celebrated on March 8, the Mandi Theater Group presented an exclusive performance of “Wings” at the Rana Reagan Community Center in Carol Stream, on March 4.

With the newly-appointed Consul General of India in Chicago Neeta Bhushan as chief guest, Hope was truly celebrated what with girls of tomorrow performing dances of empowerment and hope.

A Mandi Theater artiste said this was a true presentation of giving ‘Wings’ to women of tomorrow.

The International Women's Day is all about unity, celebration, reflection, advocacy and action--whatever that looks like globally at a local level.

Saloni Shah and Ritu Ahuja played the role of a sex worker and dayan (witch), whereas Arnab Sarkar's portrayal of transgender issues was flawless.

Supported by Abha Dey,Alka Sharma, Madhu Arya, Tara Swaminathan, Sonali Pednekar, Abhilasha and Sulogna, the group also portrayed many other bold stories that kill taboos and bring truth out of shadows of shame. Anand Gupta conducted proceedings of the event.

The Consul General praised their homegrown talent and expressed satisfaction. She also appreciated the efforts of the group bringing heart-touching stories from daily lives that took her back to her childhood memories.

She further added that the stories are relevant today on Women's Day even though our society is changing.

“With continued efforts we will propel us to new heights” said Bhushan and spoke about India’s ‘Beti Padhao Beti Bachao' campaign.

Said a Mandi Theater official "We at Mandi Theater group proved it with gusto, bringing to light current issues like acid attack, child trafficking, witch hunting, widows’ rights,sex workers and transgender.

Peppered with issues of today's everyday women like gender equality, domestic expectations that heavily weigh on one side, or shaming outdated rituals like Manjal Neerattu Vizha--the coming of age ceremony.

Another artiste said: “This was our humble attempt to keep the movement going and give empowerment a push with women of tomorrow in fashion parade . Also, around the world, the art of women inspires thought and provokes action. Everyone enjoyed the art exhibition by local women artists."
